Dear Sir,
I have read your posting from many years ago regarding the special "Police" transmission, avaialble only by special appointment and right from factory in the very last (mayby 50?) combined Fiat 130 3200 limousines and coupés.
Those boxes had the Fiat spare numbers: 4239662 et 4256799 (first for limousine the later for coupé)
I am also from Germany and according to the latest 1978 microfiches in my collection there was a special "fast shift action" transmission that was previousily used only in cars for the police and
special forces in italy.
These special cars (accoding to a talk with centro storico 20 years ago) could be equiped with bulletproof armor and a stronger 3.5 engine with higher compression, hotter camshafts and different (3?) carbs intake manifold provided by Abarth.
Maybe you have a much stronger 3.5 engine and you did not know about it. Please watch the motor code. The stronger engines had an 130 AR xxxx number because Abarth was in charge for the tuning.
The ZF stock "dogleg" 5 speed transmission was a very old design from the 1960s and a sturdy unit but not easy nor fast to shift.
It was not liked by government and rallye drivers.
Fiat got the ZF S5 18-3 box as "leftover" because Mercedes stopped using ZF S5 18-3 transmissions in the W116 cars, so Fiat could purchase this "obsolete" series of transmissions for a good price from ZF.
Same story with Alfa 6 Berlina that used the identical transmission. (Not sure about the Montreal)
I am also still looking for more informations about the mythical "Fiat 130 police super 5 speed gearbox", could you please make a photo of the box and look for markings on the castings?
Fiat did not produce a 5 speed box for the few "Super 130" in house. (The last top class rear drive transmission Fiat produced in house was the DINO 2000 unit and that is much smaller) Fiat must have purchased the "police 130" gearbox units in very small numbers maybe from Colotti or even France (pont à Mouson=PSA) there was even a very good 5 speed transmission in the Rover SD1 it is not impossible that Fiat got some gearboxes from UK for special use. In the microfiches the Box has a different spare number than the normal ZF Box.
Could you please provide more destails avout your car? Is it a former italian car from an embassy or the italian police?
